Stanwell WI was formed in May 1919 – so we are busy arranging our centenary celebrations.
Lillian Belletti, a retired Italian opera singer and Stanwell resident, was interested in this new (to England) women’s movement and called a meeting of interested ladies. After a successful application to the WI headquarters, Stanwell WI was formed.
We meet at 7.30 on the first Tuesday of the month, at Stanwell Village Hall. We have a varied programme of events throughout the year, we try to find something for everyone.
Our events usually include a skittles evening, a quiz night and maybe a barn dance, as well as several coffee mornings. We have educational visits throughout the year and in the summer, we have a day at the seaside, a picnic by the river and a famous garden party in August.
At our birthday and Christmas parties, as well as the usual entertainment, we are usually treated to a performance by our very own drama queens. We have a thriving croquet club, that plays between April and September – our green has a magnificent oak tree in the middle, which is a great test of our abilities. Every year, the team goes to play at Polesdon Lacey, where the greens are excellent. In the close season, we have lunches and coffee mornings.
We have two book clubs that meet once a month and a walking group that also meet up once a month, but on different days and times to allow as many members as possible to go on the walks. They are usually about 2 miles, and we end them with a coffee and a chat. In the winter we still meet up and play some indoor short mat bowls.
We are a lively, friendly WI who really like to enjoy ourselves and would love to welcome new members.
