The Alexandra WI was formed in October 2010, filling a gap in the ‘WI map’ of North London. Based at CUFOS, the former Alexandra Palace railway station in the shadow of that iconic landmark, the WI attracts women from Muswell Hill, Crouch End and further afield.
Now in our eleventh year, we’ve grown to a membership of around 35, with a mix of ages from 30s through to 70s. Like many WIs, we’re still keen to attract more younger members, but we welcome any local women looking for some ‘time out’ to learn and laugh and enjoy the fellowship of other women with us on the first Tuesday evening of the month.
We like to think we offer a stimulating programme of events, and over the years some of our more popular meetings have including gin and wine tastings, singing and creative writing sessions, and talks from a female pilot, Fine Cell Work, Dame Hillary Blume of Knit for Peace, the CEO of Alexandra Palace, Wildes Cheese and more.
We also have an annual ‘members’ meeting’ in September, when we invite our own members to talk about aspects of their lives outside the WI: this is always a popular session.
In addition, we run two knitting groups, aim to hold at least three outings a year, including a spring walk and an autumn theatre trip, and at least one fundraising stall a year. We’re also looking to intersperse our these meetings with some ‘impromptu’ gatherings such as pub and cinema get-togethers.
Members of other WIs are always warmly welcomed at our meetings: please don’t be shy if you’re in the area, or if our speaker or activity is of interest.
